Review: Power Control Plus widget for Android

by David Gilson 05.27.2011

The idea of customisable home screens is that users can access their favourite apps, personal data, and phone settings, without digging through menus. Android’s Power Control widget is one example of this, allowing the user to toggle the most energy hungry parts of their device. This is where Power Control Plus steps in, taking that idea to the next level. The original Power Control widget allows you to activate or deactivate five Android settings: WiFi , Bluetooth, GPS, Auto Sync, and screen brightness. However, there are plenty more features buried away in the Android menus, likely to be in regular use. Constantly going through menus multiplies the time it takes to control the device. Power Control Plus can help by imitating the Power Control widget, adding programmable buttons, with access .....

There are many longtime iPhone users who’ve been thinking about jumping over to the more flexible and open ecosystem and if they use Google on a day to day basis this might help their decision.

Its been a couple days since the launch of the much hyped LG G2X from T-Mobile while initial reviews stated that the phone had support for ATT 3G (850/1900 bands) it seems that many early adopters unlocking the handset via T-Mobile and 3rd party sites are finding that ATT 3G is unavailable, only being left with 2G. While its unclear whether this is due to a baseband lockout or unavailable hardware support, we have yet to hear official word from either LG or T-Mobile. Many are looking to the community for a solution in hopes that a new ROM for the device will unlock the needed baseband. For those interested XDA-forums has a lively post regarding the 3G lockout issue. As for myself I am still waiting for an unlock .....

While Nokia created waves with its E6 and X7 launch today, HTC has announced two new multimedia handsets, the Sensation and Sensation 4G. Both handsets are identical with the only difference being that the Sensation 4G will support T-Mobile USA’s 4G network. The Sensation’s most notable specifications are a 4.3″ qHD (540×960) display, 8MP camera with 1080p video recording, 1.2GHz dual core processor, aluminum unibody design, contoured glass edging, and the new HTC Sense experience. The Sensation will also be the first device to launch with HTC Watch, an application/service that will offer movies for rent or purchase.  While a release date has not been announced we can most likely expect to see this in the first half of 2011.

With cloud services picking up steam and Amazon’s recent launch of its Cloud Player service it’s no surprise that Google would have something of their own lined up for release. Android’s next generation music player (v.3) which leaked online gives a glimpse of what we can expect when this becomes an official release. Most noteable is the streaming and download service which can be found in the settings. Although not currently active it does leave us wondering what type of service Google will offer when the service goes live.   There are also welcome changes to the UI which incorporate smoother transitions and better use of the album art. While the performance of v.3 is acceptable it does suffer from lag when loading album art and scrolling songs. After using .....

Thumbnail image for Mobile World Congress Day 2 Round Up: LG

In January at CES LG was one of the first to introduce a dual-core mobile phone to the world. The Optimus 2x had an amazing feature set that seemed to be the best of what LG had to offer. Almost a month later, LG is at it again introducing the worlds first 3D mobile device that shoots 3D content. So how does the Optimus 3D perform all these tasks? With something called the “tri-dual” configuration which combines dual-core, dual-channel, and dual-memory. By doing this they are able to provide a substantial difference in processing power compared to standard dual-core mobile processor. The handset will shoot in full 1080p (2D) and 720p (3D) using its 5MP camera, and naturally playback in 3D on the 4.3″ display. Expect the Optimus 3D in .....

Today started possibly one of the most exciting weeks for any mobile enthusiast thanks to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The yearly mobile device expo is where manufacturers unveil some of their most impressive work and this year is no different. Sony Ericsson’s rather lackluster line-up for the past couple years has finally improved. This year they present the world with a vast array of unique devices. It seems like there is something for everyone. Probably one of the more unique handsets to be announced is the Xperia PLAY. This handset combines a great phone with console quality gaming controls. The gaming platform will be supported by some of the biggest companies (Sony Computer Entertainment, Digital Chocolate, Digital Legends, Electronic Arts, Fishlabs, Gamehouse, Gameloft, Glu Mobile, Handy Games, Namco Bandai Networks, Polarbit, PopCap, Trendy Entertainment,Unity Tecnologies) which will help the Xperia PLAY become .....
