Ovi Maps: Still lacking search results

Situation: I was hungry and decided to pick up some pizza on the way home. I knew what I wanted. The place is called “Whata Lotta Pizza”. You might have eaten there before since there are quite a few around. I didn’t have the number on hand so I decided to fire up Ovi Maps to get it. I was only about 3 miles away. Instead of typing out their whole name I searched for “pizza”. Simple and to the point, right? Well the results didn’t show up in Ovi Maps for Whata Lotta Pizza. Plenty of other results showed up for pizza places within a few miles, but not the one that I wanted. Thankfully I had Google Maps installed on my Nokia N8. Sure enough, it was the .....

Look everyone! My Nokia N8 has finally arrived

Thumbnail image for Look everyone! My Nokia N8 has finally arrived

The wait is finally over. Ever since I first heard about the Nokia N8 and its 12MP camera with xenon flash I knew this would be the phone for me. Being a mobile fanatic and phone reviewer it’s hard to use one device as my own, let alone find one that I actually like and be happy with. I owned the Nokia N97 for just over a year but was never 100% happy. More like 50%. Every time I was offered a device to trial and review I jumped at the chance and held onto it as long as I possibly could. I haven’t been comfortable saying that I love a phone certain phone since the Nokia N82. I even tolerated using EDGE speeds in the USA much like N900 .....

While the Nokia N8 has been out for a couple months the price has rarely budged from MSRP since launch. Luckily, those who have been looking for a sweet deal on Nokia’s flagship will be happy to know that Dell currently has the green color on sale for $449 + tax. If you’re still on the fence about purchasing the N8, don’t forget to check out the gallery and the initial look.

MazeLock: Swipe a custom pattern on the screen to unlock your Symbian device

Thumbnail image for MazeLock: Swipe a custom pattern on the screen to unlock your Symbian device

Nokia users will love this one. Ever see an Android fanatic swipe his/her finger around the screen with a secret pattern to unlock the phone? MazeLock for Symbian gives this functionality for Symbian touch devices such as the Nokia N8, C7, E7, and N97. Yes, S60v5 phones are included! The application is called MazeLock and is made by the fine developers over at ThinkChange. Check out this video to see MazeLock in action… I love that you customize the background, colors, date formats, etc. It’s really great to see more and more of these utilities coming to the Symbian platform. Best of all? MazeLock is free! How does it work? I’ll just take the description straight from the developer’s site: You need first to set your own unlock pattern by .....

Swype now available in Ovi Store for Nokia N8

Thumbnail image for Swype now available in Ovi Store for Nokia N8

Swype has finally hit the Ovi Store today for Nokia N8 users. It’s been available for the Nokia C7 for a few weeks but the N8 version was delayed. If you follow the smartphone world and haven’t heard of Swype, you’re just not paying attention. This keyboard alternative is hugely popular in the Android community, giving another way to type besides the standard qwerty text input. Instead of touching your finger on each key, you simply ‘swipe’ your finger across the letters of the word you’re trying to spell without lifting that finger off the screen. The word prediction and auto-correct works very well right out of the box. Over time the application will learn words and patterns and become easier to use. I’ve gotten a fair amount of use .....

When Nokia announced the E7 at Nokia World in September they said it would be available in Quarter 4. Seems they are going to stay true to their word. In a Q&A session today on Twitter someone asked Nokia when the E7 would be shipping. The response was: E7 is scheduled to ship starting from Dec10. Exact availability varies country-by-country. This should come as no surprise to our Canadian readers as Rogers and Nokia go way back but as the leaked slide above shows, Nokia’s latest flagship device will launch on Canada’s largest wireless carrier sometime in Q4. More after the break.

What does ClearBlack Display (CBD) mean exactly? It’s finally explained

Thumbnail image for What does ClearBlack Display (CBD) mean exactly? It’s finally explained

ClearBlack Display technology, also known as CBD, was introduced at Nokia World 2010 back in September. If you remember we talked about it in our hands-on Nokia E7 article but didn’t have all the details. We knew it makes black colors even blacker and the screen is sharper and much more vivid. It especially enhances the phone’s display in bright light and outdoor conditions. ClearBlack display will make checking Ovi Maps or looking up locations on the web while walking outside a breeze. You won’t have to squint or turn your phone away from the sun as much to see the screen. As of right now ClearBlack display is featured on the Nokia E7 (slated for end of Q4) and the Nokia C6-01, which recently began shipping. How does it .....

Y’know what Nokia? If you’re going to keep shipping devices so quickly after announcing them, you’re going to make it very difficult for me to keep making fun of you. Today’s announcement that the Nokia C6-01 has begun shipping worldwide makes that 2 devices in a row that have been released shortly after their unveiling. More about this after the jump

A few weeks back we told you that PR1.3 for the Nokia N900 would be right around the corner with some nice updates and bug fixes. We also mentioned that developers who own the N900 would be able to boot MeeGo to get a feel for the environment and how their apps will work. Well firmware version 20.2010.36.2 landed about four days ago and N900 users are scrambling to find a PR1.3 changelog with noticeable changes, updates, and fixes.

I’ll trade you my ‘Peter Skillman’ rookie card for your ‘Ari Jaaksi’

by Kyron John 10.17.2010
Thumbnail image for I’ll trade you my ‘Peter Skillman’ rookie card for your ‘Ari Jaaksi’

Just over a month ago, Nokia hired Peter Skillman to craft the User Experience and Services for their heavily anticipated, upcoming MeeGo-powered devices. A couple of weeks later, Ari Jaaksi, VP of MeeGo devices at Nokia resigned for what, at the time, he said were ‘personal reasons’. Less than 2 weeks later, he turned up at Palm as Senior Vice President of WebOS. That’s a lot of activity for just 30 days but really nothing out of the ordinary when you take a second look.
