Video Review: Twitter app for the Nokia N9 after the PR1.1 update

by Mike Macias 12.12.2011
Twitter on the Nokia N9

The Nokia N9 was recently updated to version PR1.1 and with it came a fast improvement in speed and stability of built-in applications. Twitter is one of the apps that I noticed big improvements in; things just run a lot faster now. Before the update this app wasn’t very responsive. When touching the reply button the app would take a few seconds to switch over, it wasn’t immediate. I ended up using TwimGo as my main Twitter app, but with the latest firmware update on the N9 I went back to the preinstalled Twitter app. Here’s a video I created to show you how Twitter runs on the N9 after PR1.1…

Video Review: Official Gmail application for iPhone and iPad

Video Review: Gmail application for iPhone and iPad

Last week Google released an official Gmail app for iOS devices. This app is a great alternative to the built-in email application that is installed on the Apple iPhone and iPad, especially for heavy Gmail users. It was first announced many weeks back, but had a severe bug and had to be pulled from the App Store. Now that it seems the bugs are worked out, I’ve tested Gmail on the iPhone 4 to show how everything works. Let’s first check out the features…

Today the folks over at Nokia Beta Labs released a new version of their app distribution store. It was previously called Ovi Store, but in this new version it’s been renamed to Nokia Store. While it doesn’t bring any new features, you get a fresh UI and nice browsing experience. I’ve noticed flicking through the app is a lot nicer and more responsive. To show you what I’m talking about I’ve created a video and a few screenshots. Have a look below…

Some phones don’t have apps or sometimes you don’t want to use an app to send a photo off to the world wide web quickly. Yesterday Twitter announced their “Share a photo via text message” feature which solves both of those issues. I decided to give it a quick run to see how it works and what kind of issues I ran into. Take a look…

Calling all gamers with quick reflexes and fast forward planning. That’s what’s needed to play, Spirit , a game available for iOS and Android. The objective of Spirit is to guide your sprite around the screen, trying to catch enemies, while avoiding contact with them. The way in which you do that is by drawing loops around them, which creates a kind of sink hole that sucks them away.

Mobile App Review: 90 app shortcuts on Symbian homescreen with Favorite Apps widget

Necessary? Not really. Possible? Absolutely – thanks to a new widget available in the Ovi Store called Favorite Apps. This widget is similar to the default Favorites widget found on Symbian^3 devices like the Nokia N8 but has a twist. With Favorite Apps by Nokia you can make one widget hold 3 shortcuts in plain view then extend to 12 more with a touch. This means you can have a total of 90 shortcuts on one homescreen or 255 total!

App Review: fMobi – the best Facebook app for the Nokia N8, N900, Symbian smartphones

It’s been over 8 years since Facebook was introduced to the world and Symbian has been around much longer. But it’s not until this year, 2011, that a complete and fully working Facebook application is available for Nokia smartphones. There have been solutions over the years that came close to a decent user experience, but none matched what you’d find on a iPhone or Android device. Even Nokia’s own Social app was a joke when it first launched, and today it’s not much more improved. Many Symbian users lost hope for a full-fledged Facebook application and moved to other operating systems. Others who didn’t need a perfect experience on their phone got by with Social, Gravity, Kasvopos, or the mobile site. Today I’m showing you a Facebook application that I’ve .....

Symbian App Review: Dropian – a Dropbox app for Nokia S60v3 smartphones

If you’re reading this blog, I’m sure you’re aware that Dropbox is an excellent cloud-based, cross-platform, user-friendly file syncing/sharing/backup service that has become hugely popular in the past couple of years. I use Dropbox rather frequently to transfer files across computers and devices wirelessly; it’s just much less of a hassle to upload something onto Dropbox and have it synced down and available for online download compared to using an old-fashioned USB flash drive to transfer files.

A few weeks back I discovered a homescreen widget in the Ovi Store called One Contact. After testing it extensively on my Nokia N8 and E7 I’d like to say that it works great and does the job. Useful tools such as this are becoming more prevalent in the Ovi Store but unfortunately they aren’t getting much attention. With the Symbian Belle release right around the corner I’d say it’s time to showcase some of these useful Symbian applications.

Android Game Review: apzOrb

Thumbnail image for Android Game Review: apzOrb

apzOrb is a new game for Android. Despite having significant differences I can’t help but think of the classic Snake game genre. You’re in control of a creature that is composed of groups of swirling cubes. Its only aim in life is to consume more and more blocks and survive as long as possible. Sounds fun, but read on to see whether it has long term appeal!

Android Game Review: Cut the Rope

by David Gilson 08.07.2011
Thumbnail image for Android Game Review: Cut the Rope

You might think physics is boring, but wait just a minute. Did you enjoy games like Worms and Angry Birds when you first played them? Well then, you actually love physics. A popular iOS game which found its way to Android, Cut the Rope, is yet another physics based game, with hilariously cute graphics. To play this one you’re going to have to brains and quick reactions. Cut the Rope is an adorably illustrated puzzle game. The very first screen when you start playing the game is a cartoon style scene inside a house, of an open front door with a box containing an abandoned creature, with instructions to feed with candy. That creature turns out to be a little green guy called “Om Nom” (full marks for plugging into .....
