Today the folks over at Nokia Beta Labs released a new version of their app distribution store. It was previously called Ovi Store, but in this new version it’s been renamed to Nokia Store. While it doesn’t bring any new features, you get a fresh UI and nice browsing experience. I’ve noticed flicking through the app is a lot nicer and more responsive. To show you what I’m talking about I’ve created a video and a few screenshots. Have a look below…

Mobile App Review: 90 app shortcuts on Symbian homescreen with Favorite Apps widget

Necessary? Not really. Possible? Absolutely – thanks to a new widget available in the Ovi Store called Favorite Apps. This widget is similar to the default Favorites widget found on Symbian^3 devices like the Nokia N8 but has a twist. With Favorite Apps by Nokia you can make one widget hold 3 shortcuts in plain view then extend to 12 more with a touch. This means you can have a total of 90 shortcuts on one homescreen or 255 total!

App Review: fMobi – the best Facebook app for the Nokia N8, N900, Symbian smartphones

It’s been over 8 years since Facebook was introduced to the world and Symbian has been around much longer. But it’s not until this year, 2011, that a complete and fully working Facebook application is available for Nokia smartphones. There have been solutions over the years that came close to a decent user experience, but none matched what you’d find on a iPhone or Android device. Even Nokia’s own Social app was a joke when it first launched, and today it’s not much more improved. Many Symbian users lost hope for a full-fledged Facebook application and moved to other operating systems. Others who didn’t need a perfect experience on their phone got by with Social, Gravity, Kasvopos, or the mobile site. Today I’m showing you a Facebook application that I’ve .....

Symbian App Review: Dropian – a Dropbox app for Nokia S60v3 smartphones

If you’re reading this blog, I’m sure you’re aware that Dropbox is an excellent cloud-based, cross-platform, user-friendly file syncing/sharing/backup service that has become hugely popular in the past couple of years. I use Dropbox rather frequently to transfer files across computers and devices wirelessly; it’s just much less of a hassle to upload something onto Dropbox and have it synced down and available for online download compared to using an old-fashioned USB flash drive to transfer files.

Symbian App Review: One Contact adds one-touch text/call buttons to a contact on your homescreen

A few weeks back I discovered a homescreen widget in the Ovi Store called One Contact. After testing it extensively on my Nokia N8 and E7 I’d like to say that it works great and does the job. Useful tools such as this are becoming more prevalent in the Ovi Store but unfortunately they aren’t getting much attention. With the Symbian Belle release right around the corner I’d say it’s time to showcase some of these useful Symbian applications.

TwimGo is a free twitter application for Nokia E7, N8, C7, and Symbian touch devices that will be available in the Ovi Store in the near future. It’s well known that Symbian users don’t have many options when looking for a decent Twitter client. TwimGo is a much welcomed addition to the Ovi Store. We got our hands on TwimGo before its release to give you a quick preview and some screenshots of it running on the Nokia N8.

App Review: Swype vs. SlideIT

by Alex Kim 11.15.2010
Thumbnail image for App Review: Swype vs. SlideIT

Hey there, Mobile Fanatics!  As my first contribution to this blog, I’ll be making a little comparison between Swype and SlideIT, two great apps that strive to accomplish the same thing: make typing easier on a touchscreen phone. If you’re using a touch-only phone with very few hardware options for input (think: iPhone, N8, most Galaxy S variations, most HTC phones, etc.) you know typing on them can be questionable at times. Now, the slide-to-type interface isn’t something completely brand-new. The first time I came across it was the PS3’s silly keyboard-on-your-controller attachment that used the same concept, only with physical buttons. It worked, but running your thumbs over tiny bumps isn’t always the nicest of sensations. I’m sure there were plenty of other attempts to revolutionize the world of .....

MazeLock: Swipe a custom pattern on the screen to unlock your Symbian device

Thumbnail image for MazeLock: Swipe a custom pattern on the screen to unlock your Symbian device

Nokia users will love this one. Ever see an Android fanatic swipe his/her finger around the screen with a secret pattern to unlock the phone? MazeLock for Symbian gives this functionality for Symbian touch devices such as the Nokia N8, C7, E7, and N97. Yes, S60v5 phones are included! The application is called MazeLock and is made by the fine developers over at ThinkChange. Check out this video to see MazeLock in action… I love that you customize the background, colors, date formats, etc. It’s really great to see more and more of these utilities coming to the Symbian platform. Best of all? MazeLock is free! How does it work? I’ll just take the description straight from the developer’s site: You need first to set your own unlock pattern by .....

Swype now available in Ovi Store for Nokia N8

Thumbnail image for Swype now available in Ovi Store for Nokia N8

Swype has finally hit the Ovi Store today for Nokia N8 users. It’s been available for the Nokia C7 for a few weeks but the N8 version was delayed. If you follow the smartphone world and haven’t heard of Swype, you’re just not paying attention. This keyboard alternative is hugely popular in the Android community, giving another way to type besides the standard qwerty text input. Instead of touching your finger on each key, you simply ‘swipe’ your finger across the letters of the word you’re trying to spell without lifting that finger off the screen. The word prediction and auto-correct works very well right out of the box. Over time the application will learn words and patterns and become easier to use. I’ve gotten a fair amount of use .....

SMS Alert is one of those applications that provides a feature that smartphones users wish was cooked into the firmware. The app developers at Symbian Guru are known to push out useful tools like this one that I’m about to show you. Want a specific SMS alert tone for your wife? Another for your parents? Do you want a loud beep to happen when people in your “work” group send you a text message? SMS Alert allows you to customize the sound and volume for every contact and group.
