If you read our Nokia N9 coverage a few weeks back you’d know that I’m in love with the N9 – more specifically its own implementation of MeeGo. A few swipes from any application on the N9 can get you to the multitasking screen, menu, or notifications list. Multitasking on my smartphone has always been a huge selling point for me when deciding what to purchase. It’s probably why I’m such a huge fan of Symbian. Before Android, webOS, and iPhone existed Symbian was doing real multitasking the right way. Then Maemo 5 along and the N900 became the multitasking champ. Nokia’s decision to customize MeeGo with its own multitasking experience has me going ga-ga over the N9. But enough about the N9. What if N8 owners can have similar capabilities?
A 3rd party Symbian developer is working to make this a reality. Right now the application dubbed GoToMenu is still in the early stages but looks to be on the right track. I know, the N8 already has a menu key that also acts as multitasking. Personally I’d rather pull the screen from one side to see all my open apps rather than hold down the button for 2 seconds. Jay from My Nokia Blog caught wind of this application and decided to learn more about it. Turns out it works how it should but right now lacks transitions and eye-candy. Take a look at this video of the upcoming version made by the developer…

As you can see it looks too choppy in its current state. Hopefully the developer can figure out how to make GoToMenu look identical to the N9-style swiping. Here is Jay’s demo of GoToMenu on the Nokia N8…

Download: You can try it yourself in the Ovi Store. Right now this seems compatible with the Nokia N8, E7, C7, and some S60v5 devices including the N97.
I’ll decide to try it myself when the developer adds the proper transitions. So what do you think? Great or gimmick?
