Google Calendar & Contact sync on the Nokia Lumia 1020 & Windows Phone just works

The Windows Phone community was up in arms late last year when Google announced that they were cutting off support for Google Sync, the technology that allows non-Android phones to sync Google accounts with built-in software. This meant that in its current state, Windows Phone devices would not be able to sync with Google Contacts and Calendar. That problem never surfaced as Google decided to delay the process and allow Microsoft time to develop official support for the CalDAV and CardDAV API protocols. And here we are 8 months later, with no issues at all. Google contacts/calendar can still sync with Windows Phone (as seen on my Nokia Lumia 1020 above) and the internet once again created an overblown situation.

The screenshots below show Windows Phone CalDAV/CardDAV support as well as Gmail labels (called Folders in WP).

Above you can see where CalDAV, CardDAV, and Gmail iMAP are automatically set up. To get this setup all I had to do was enter my username and password.

The screenshot on the left is my Lumia 1020 calendar settings. Those two calendars (Personal and Mikey’s Events) were automatically added. These are connected to my Google account and I can optionally turn them on or off and change the colors. On the right side you see my contact view filter options. Google is present, along with Facebook, Twitter, and Live Mail.

And lastly we have Windows Phone Gmail settings. The left screenshot shows all my Gmail labels (aka Folders in Windows Phone). You can view emails from each label or move emails from the Inbox to a label. Unfortunately you cannot apply a label without moving it there and eliminating it from the inbox. The screenshot to the right shows email sync settings. Notice that there is no “Always On” setting? That’s because Google is only allowing the iMAP protocol for Gmail. If you set it to 15 minutes or 30 minutes, most often the email comes through immediately. It’s an open connection and you rarely have to wait 15 or 30 minutes for the sync to happen. If you set it to hourly you’ll get slightly better battery life and the connection will not be always open. This setting always controls how often contacts and calendar are synced

See. Google sync, including contacts and calendar, work great on Windows Phone. The latest WP GDR2 update that was released this week adds the necessary CalDAV and CardDAV support to all WP8 devices.

But they abandoned Windows Phone 7.8 users, perhaps…

Did you test it again? I really can make it work on my HTC Surround. I forced it with SevenEighter to WP 7.8, worked for a few months after the upgrade but now it has stopped working.

  • http://www.themobilefanatics.com Mike Macias

  • franzfume

    about 500
google sync is working for mail and calendar but give error if I turn on contacts

  • franzfume

    I have found the cause—-
the picture I attach to some contact.
I ghave exported contacts out from gmail in CSV, then removed all and reimported. Of course this save contact data but strip out the picture.
    Now I sync correctly..
But if I put the picture again in some contacts, sync stop again

Hi there! How do I get the calendar tile on the home screen to show the next, for example, three events even if they are “spread” on one, two or three days? As it is today it’s just showing one… / Lisa

I have 5 subscribed calendars in Google that I cannot get to sync. I have the Nokia 1020 with the update. Adding the Google account was as easy as this article says it is but none of the Google calendar events are showing up in my W8 calendar. If I check settings I can see that the W8 calendar shows all subscribed Google calendars as a single calendar.
I have tried forced syncing, delete and re-add. I have checked the server names. No luck so far.
    Any ideas?
