Here’s another one of our side by side comparisons that you love so much. This time we have the Nokia Lumia 900 and the Lumia 800. The Lumia 900 was announced earlier this week at CES and will be coming exclusively to AT&T in March. Both of these devices are powered by Windows Phone and fit into the high-end smartphone market.

Before we go onto the photos, let’s first take a look at the specs.

Nokia Lumia 900 vs. 800 specifications

Screen: 900 has a 4.3″ screen, 800 has a 3.7″ screen. Both have 480×800 resolution, so the 800 might look sharper.
Size: The Lumia 900 is 127.8×68.5×11.5mm, 800 is 116.5×61.2×12.1mm. Turns out the Lumia 900 is .6mm thinner than the Lumia 800.
Camera: Both have the same camera on the rear, but the 900 is the only one with a front-facing camera.
The Lumia 900 is compatible with AT&T’s 4G LTE network. The Lumia 800 is currently available in Europe and will be sold unlocked in the US soon.
Same body style and both devices made of a poly-carbonate material.
Both devices have a 1.4GHz processor.

Now let’s get to the good stuff!

Just like I mentioned in my Nokia 900 vs. Samsung Galaxy S2 gallery (which is awesome if you haven’t seen it), this 900 is a prototype. Some very small details might be a bit different on the finished version like cleaner edges and product name placement.

The top of the Lumia 900 is different than the 800. On the Lumia 800 the charging port is located under a door next to the audio jack. The 900 has it open and exposed, making it easier to charge in the car or when using external charges in your pocket.

Both devices are smooth around the sides and the button layout is the same. You have a dedicated camera key, lock button, and volume rockers.

If you look closely you’ll noticed the Nokia Lumia 900 has a flat screen, unlike the 800 which has a curved-glass screen.

This angle makes the Lumia 900 look much larger than the 800. It doesn’t seem like this much of a difference when you see them in person. Also take note that the flash placement on the 900 is just above the camera lens while the 800 has it to the right.

I still like the Lumia 800 better, especially because it’s smaller and has better pixel density. I don’t use front-facing cameras that much, though I’d still love to have one, but it’s nothing more than a perk. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the 900, but I’m getting sick of really big phones.

I’m not too worried about the pixel density. The difference was hardly noticeable on the 900. One thing to keep in mind, the 800 has a pentile display and the 900 doesn’t.

I agree the trend of big phones is starting to get pretty repetitive and annoying. The size of the N9 and 800 is perfect in my opinion. With that said, I’ll probably get the 900

All I see is that these newer Windows Phones for the USA still only have 16 GB. Data caps are not a friend to my media consumption, so users will need more storage capacity. Microsoft, think 64GB.

No, the N9 is not Windows Phone. My comment was targeted at Windows Phone and the absence of devices with higher storage amounts than 16GB in the USA. The N9 is a MeeGo device, and I could buy an iPhone 4S to get 64GB, but those aren’t relevant to being able to have 64GB for the Windows Phone UX, are they?

I see what you’re saying. I’m also let down by the 900′s lack of more storage. Is 16GB a Windows Phone limitation (like screen resolution) or is it just a manufacturer failure?

It may very well be a WP limitation, as there is no announced or released WP7 device that has more than 16 GB built-in – some support the microSD expansion to more. I wonder why 16 GB was the number?

It is not a limitation. It is blatant manufacturer failure. If this could be proven to have been done to the detriment of consumers, it’d be collusion and the OEMs and carriers would be charged by the FTC and any other applicable bodies. An example of 16GB not being a limitation is the Fujitsu Toshiba IS12T, an awful Windows Phone except that it DOES have 32GB, but it’s only available in Japan. It is not certified for USA use, so it’s unlikely for it to be seen here.

I’ve been using a WP7 phone now for over a year and I have to say that Microsoft just doesnt get it!!! Why are we a consumers stuck with all these crappy handsets running WP7??? Nobody in Redmond seems to care or listen because they cant get theit sh**t together due to internal bickering (yes I do work in Redmond) And none of the Luminas will be any better…sorry…crappy OS, crappy handsets, lousy support. It’s sad too see that even on campus the Iphone rules!!!

i think that using the same body shape of the N9 on both lumia 800 and lumia 900 is ridiculous, it makes the phone lose it’s uniqueness, Nokia used to say “it’s not just a phone it’s a life style” but it seems that they forgot the part about style! I’m not a Nokia hater but a fan i have Nokia E7 with the new Symbian belle, which bring us to the point that Nokia should consider making a new phone with qwerty keyboard because that is what i look for in a phone, and probably making a phone with more screen pixels so that it keeps in the competition and big screen yeah that is something i like in a phone because i can read PDF files comfortably on it and surf the net and watch videos when ever I’m out of home having nothing but my mobile is me, and as for you mike thanks for the review you did a great job keep it up and thanks.

Well an also concerned about the space in both Lumia 800 and 900 not being upgrade to more than the iPhone.The camera resolution is not so competent to devices which I used before such as HTC HD 2 .Lastly the battery’s duarabulity has to be remarkable.competent.Its like the advert is more than the reality
