Look everyone! My Nokia N8 has finally arrived P1020613 thumb

The wait is finally over. Ever since I first heard about the Nokia N8 and its 12MP camera with xenon flash I knew this would be the phone for me. Being a mobile fanatic and phone reviewer it’s hard to use one device as my own, let alone find one that I actually like and be happy with. I owned the Nokia N97 for just over a year but was never 100% happy. More like 50%. Every time I was offered a device to trial and review I jumped at the chance and held onto it as long as I possibly could. I haven’t been comfortable saying that I love a phone certain phone since the Nokia N82. I even tolerated using EDGE speeds in the USA much like N900 fans on the AT&T network do. I enjoyed the N82 and it’s amazing camera, it suited my lifestyle so well. But once I got a taste for 3G speeds and larger screens I just couldn’t use the N82 as my main device anymore. I longed for a replacement since then, something that would give me a large screen, good camera with xenon flash, 3G compatibility for AT&T, and of course Symbian. “What the hell Mike, Symbian sucks”. I’ll save my reasons for sticking with Symbian for another article. Nothing really caught my eye in the past year, especially since I wanted to stay with Nokia and their amazingly sturdy hardware. That’s what brings us to the N8.

The Nokia N8 that I won in London at Nokia World finally shipped out this week. I’ve been bugging my Nokia contact (hi Anna!) for months to hurry up and get it shipped! She probably hates my pestering by now, but it’s finally shipped. Something funny happened though. When I found out my winning blue N8 was on its way, I came across a tweet by Matthew Miller just a few minutes later. He said he really wanted a blue N8 but couldn’t find one here in the States. Hmmm… I really wanted the silver. Well we pulled off an even trade. A brand new blue N8 for a brand new silver N8. The timing couldn’t have been better. My silver arrived and his blue N8 is probably somewhere over the Atlantic right now. I fired up my silver N8 last night and spent hours setting up all of my apps, settings, and homescreens. I’m still not done but I have most of what I need installed and configured. Instead of rambling on more about the phone I’ll show you some photos of my Nokia N8 that I took this morning. Have a look…

That’s it for now. I have plenty of more pictures that I’ll be uploading tonight. Wish I could’ve taken the whole day off work just to talk about the N8, but no-can-do. We’ll have a lot more to talk about in the coming days including comparisons with other phones and some in-depth app reviews. Keep checking back for more Nokia N8 coverage!

Hmm got a grey nokia n8 about two weeks back, Loved it and still loving it. Its just that somehow i feel very unlucky with hardware. I have heard stories of people who dropped the phone from the first floor and survived. People’s phone falling from stairs and surviving.*sigh* My nokia n97 fell from my pocket in its sitting position and the silver chrome band around the display dislodged and the phone went havoc. All the nokia phones that i have used seemed to fall apart in my hands while i hear stories of users surviving worse and now the sadest. The n8 fell from table i was charging it from and some how when i press the metal body behind the phone on the upper area i hear a snap sound regularly and my vibrator seems to be weak. I dont know if the vibrator was like that itself before. But when your phone falls down, you notice the slightest defects. *cries*. and my experience with the Nokia customer care in india has been horrific. They will dance a vodoo dance around me and probably curse me till eternityBut i still love the phone, the display feels like heaven, the response of the device is too good and the camera is worth the price. Other than small niggles in the operating system i feel symbian runs circles around android, its just that users arent just willing to give the OS a chance.Sigh now if only i can change my running bad luck with hardware or if look at the silver lining, advertise my knack with destroying hardware and get a job in nokia hardware testing :D

Oh noes! I dropped my N900 two stories at my school and it still looks and feels perfect… You should try to find some way to contact Nokia corporate and complain to their customer care. Kinda ironic since I talk to Indians all the time for customer service over here and all they ever wanna do is make me happy…

Yes, yes we are! So glad I went with the silver. It matches my car. I nicknamed it “silver fox”.

I got a phone call from work that pissed me off so much that I wound up whipping my N900 across the room. I think I loosened the screen ribbon as it flickers a bit when I type now, but otherwise you’d never know I treated it like a baseball.

Yup more stories how strong nokia mobiles are but still i sadly look at my n8 and weep. :( well when my phone rings i can hardly feel the phone vibrate in my pockets. About the customer care, i had emailed alot of people. The nokia priority dealer had given me the email of some executive in the corporate office to complain. You see me and my family had bought enough of phonew from him that he got scared when i told him thats enough no more nokia. So he gave me this guys email. The guy calls me and says i feel for you and really sorry and all bullshit after that nothing. I email him once more after that and no response. I actually thought that time no more nokia but i fell in love with the n8. I really love nokia hardware and love symbian but the customer care is horrible in india.Yes we indians love to help forgeiner customers. But generally indians treat indians badly, a sad fact.

That’s terrible… I get the feeling you’re just gettin the short straw over and over, hardware-wise. There’s probably not much you can do, unfortunately :/

But, at least you have the opportunity to use Nokia phones. In Korea, the cell phone market is so locked down by Samsung and LG that you can’t find a Nokia. My friend just moved over there for work, and he said the only Nokia models he can find are the X6, 5800, and 6210. Occasionally, he’ll find an N97 that found its way into the country (usually through a traveller) and never left.

Yup thats true i guess i can only cry online

Ouch i would hate to be in a situation where i’m stuck with a samsung or a LG phone. Somehow i feel comfortable with a Nokia.

ANOTHER POC FROM NOKIA. WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO RELEASE FIRMWARE UPDATE 3.0 FOR THE DAMN N97?

Nice one Mike, I am just wondering if there is a way to completely shut off the screensaver (Black screen with Digital Clock and Date). Surely it cannot be on forever, battery life takes a knock. Is there also a good weather widget? My accuweather aint working (it always asks for choosing a location when accessed from the widgets, and when I try to add a location it just doesnt select any)! A bit frustrating!

Hey buddy. Yes you can turn off screensaver under Settings > Themes > Screensaver > None. Check out the Music screensaver, it’s much less intrusive than Big Clock. I’ve read that because of the AMOLED screen hardly any battery is used. I leave Big Clock on and easily get a full day of heavy use, although I haven’t performed any detailed tests yet.

I don’t like the AccuWeather widget either. As of right now the only other solution is SBP Weather which is $14.99, but the app is beautiful. I’ll let you know if something else pops up.

Hey buddy, regarding the screensaver, I meant the option to have the screensaver go to sleep after a specific amount of time. Like it is with previous phones, e.g. E71 etc. But if you say that the AMOLED screen is designed not to chaw battery, then its fine – although the option to have it go to sleep completely is still welcome.

SPB Weather, let me get a trial and see if I like it. I would also like a decent dictionary.

You know, Nokia’s Social Network app is really poor, the UI is just not up to standard, I’m so glad I made a decision to buy Gravity last year.

The big clock will not go to sleep. If you set it to “none” you can still tap the menu key and pull up the screensaver.

You don’t like the dictionary that is pre-installed? Yes, Gravity is a must-have application.
