I’ve been using the Nokia E5 for about 3 weeks and so far I’m extremely impressed. It’s a great phone for those looking to upgrade from the Nokia E71, E72, or maybe you’re sick of your Blackberry device but want something similar. I know I have a ton of followers from my E71 Fanatics days who are still clinging to their E71, mainly because they haven’t seen anything as powerful and reliable come out of the Nokia camp with a price range of under $300. If you follow me on Twitter you’ll know that I’ve been harping the past few weeks about the stability Nokia E5 and how amazed I am at the price. Right now Amazon has the black and white E5Nokia E5 vs. E71 photos with the E73 mixed in for $200 (prices vary). Sometimes the white E5 price will jump to $280 – but right now it’s a steal. Compare that with $229.99 for the E71 and $319 for the E72. You tell me which is the better purchase.

The Nokia E5 has a mono-block QWERTY design that so many people still love. It has a great email experience, fast browser, 5 megapixel camera, great Facebook integration, and plenty of RAM. We have a full hands-on Nokia E5 review in the works, but for now check out these Nokia E5 vs. E71 side by side photos, with the Nokia E73 (which I reviewed) thrown in.

Wondering if the Nokia E5 works with 3G in the USA? Yes it does! It’s a quad-band GSM phone with 850/900/1800/1900 frequencies and US/International 3G compatibility via 850/1900/2100 UMTS/HSDPA plus GPRS/EDGE capabilities. It seems the E5 is really flying under the radar right now with virtually no hype on the interwebs.

I’ll be adding lots of E5 coverage in the upcoming days so keep checking back! Be sure to view our Nokia E5 photo gallery while you wait.

i’m thinking about buying the e5. is it better than the e71?. i dont need video call. i just want a smartphone where i can read and fix powerpoint slides (homework), read pdf, easy to use. with facebook, twitter, messenger or skype, and to browse webpages, mostly googling stuff for school. and durable of course. so that i might not have to replace it for another 3 years (budget).
    thanks.

also, i hear bad reviews about the e5 screen, the browser freezes, and being plastic. but i read good reviews as well. if e5 is the way to go, which would u choose? the black or white version? is the white keyboard plastic like the really old nokias? those got pretty dirty.

The screen of the Nokia E5 is the same as E71. You will want a screen protector for it because the plastic that is over the screen seems to scratch easily. I haven’t had a problem with the browser freezing, especially on the latest firmware. Yes, the phone is mostly plastic, opposite of E71. If you drop it you will get scratches and dings, but nothing serious. I’ve dropped mine from a big fall and everything still works. 3 years for a smartphone? That’s asking a lot. I would get the black version. It’s the only one I’ve held and I love it.

I don’t know – I’m struggling to love my e5 as I did my e71. It feels cheaper, more plasticy, they’ve taken away the metallic casing of the e71 which gave it a really classy look and replaced all with plastic. The antenna is now at the bottom of the phone so when browsing you have to be really careful how you hold it or the signal just drops. The power supply is fed into the the top of the phone, so if you’re trying to answer a call while it’s charging the cable gets in your face; the memory card is under the battery so you have to completely power down if you want to swap the card. I don’t know whether this is specific to my particular phone, but it seems slow to do basic things like open contacts, etc. freezes and crashes quite a lot. To top it all off, they’ve got this silly emoticon thing that replaces certain character combinations with emoticons, so if someone texts you to meet them at ’8pm’ all you see is a stupid yellow face sticking its tongue out, followed by an ‘m’. Is this a children’s phone for goodness sake? or a serious smart phone?
