Ovi Store updated with “app update notifications”, available in US

A few weeks after our report that Ovi Store will be “updated next week” we finally got the big Ovi Store update that Symbian users have been waiting for. This may seem silly to Android and iOS users who’ve had this feature for ages but for Symbian users this is huge. Previously I had no idea when apps on my Nokia N8 have been updated. Now when you launch the Ovi Store you will be notified if any apps or games have new versions. Hallelujah!

Let’s take a look at how it works…

A small green digit showing the number of updates available appears on the “ACCOUNT” tab in the top-right of the screen.

When you tap “Updates” you are shown a list of applications that need updating. You can update them all at once or one at a time.

Update multiple applications at once seems to be a problem. The first time I launched the new Ovi Store I tried the “Update All” feature. That was a bad idea. Only one application managed to install and the other three failed. I think it had to do with Nokia Smart Installer, which is known to have problems as my pal Micky from NokiaDNA.com pointed out today. It might also have to do with the fact that Nokia IM is a pretty big application that I should have probably updated on its own. Regardless of the problem, it was an annoyance.

Update one at a time. I then proceeded to update the applications one by one. This worked fine although it took a bit of time because I had to keep coming back to check if one of the updates was done. In the end it all worked but it was a painful process which took about 20 minutes to update five applications. Hopefully next time I try to update multiple apps at once in the Ovi Store the process is a little smoother.

Signing in to Ovi Store over and over. Why do I have to sign-in every time I launch the Ovi Store? I also check the “Remember me” box but that doesn’t help the issue. Even if I don’t restart the device this happens. Closing the Ovi Store then immediately opening again requires me to sign in before I can install anything. I know I’m not an isolated case because I’ve had many Symbian users ask me about this.

More updates

The ability to update applications is not the only thing new in Ovi Store 2.0. The fellas over at AllAboutSymbian.com have reported the following changelog:

  • Users are able to review and apply updates to apps they’ve downloaded from the Ovi Store. The server now sends version numbers automatically down to the client on the phone.
  • Nokia’s algorithm for delivering ‘Top Free’ and ‘Best Sellers’ has been tweaked, to “make app and game listings more relevant for consumers”. Internal rankings are now filtered better by device and region, so that popularity in one niche won’t skew the whole.
  • Finding relevant apps has been made easier, with the addition of a â€œusers who downloaded x also downloaded y” system.
  • Localization of S60 clients to Arabic Store clients for S60 5th Edition and S60 3rd Edition.

Those guys are always on it!

Availability

This update brings the Ovi Store to version 2.08.042. The reason I mentioned “available in US” in the title is because usually North America has to wait for updates like until after the rest of the world is taken care of. This time around it seems to be a worldwide update unless something goes wrong. Keep in mind this is only for Symbian^3 devices right now (Nokia N8, E7, C7, C6-01) plans for older devices are in the works. No timetable for Symbian S60 devices has been set.

To update the Ovi Store simply launch the application and follow the instructions.

I had the same issue with “Update all”, but I just started the store and hit Update all again and it just worked. I think I broke it as I tried to launch an application that was being updated, not the smartest thing :)

Good to see you got it to work properly! What country are you in so I can see if it’s a complete Ovi Store rollout.

Just updated in the UK about an hour ago, but as I reset my phone about a week ago, none of my apps have an update available, and TBH , unless Ovi store starts carrying the latest version of apps, I’ll continue to go direct to the developer to stay ‘up to date’ , will see if the update is worth while when something arrives I want to download turns up’ or if any of my current apps are updated at the store ?

I wonder how fast a dev can submit an update to Ovi Store and have it ready for consumers. For now I also check devs site to make sure I have latest versions.
