Prediction: Nokia N9 will come to the US nokia n9 america usa

Update: Nokia N9 available at Amazon in the US

It’s been reported today by a few sources that the Nokia N9 will not be coming to U.S. retailers at this time. Nothing has been officially announced so right now it’s just speculation. The news is a shock to many, and at the same time many insiders saw this coming. The N9 is one of the most praised devices that Nokia has announced in years, but there’s a problem (if you want to call it that). It doesn’t fall in line with the long-term plan that Nokia is about to start. I’m sure all of you know about the Nokia + Microsoft partnership to have Windows Phone operating system running on high-end Nokia phones. If you missed that memo read it here. The Nokia N9 is powered by a custom version of MeeGo. A huge event called Nokia World is slated for late October in London where Nokia is going to announce their first Windows Phone devices and hopefully have them available to purchase days or weeks later. Obviously Nokia doesn’t want fans to open their wallet for the N9 until they see the Windows Phones they have to offer.

Engadget says they got confirmation that the N9 will not be coming to U.S. shores at this time. Here is the statement they posted:

If you’ve been eagerly awaiting September 23rd so you can grab your very own Nokia N9 in America, the company’s first (and last) MeeGo smartphone may not be shipping in your region after all. We’ve been reaching out to Espoo in recent weeks in an attempt to nail down a US ship date for the drop-dead gorgeous handset, and much to our chagrin, we received a rather disheartening reply:

“After the very positive reception to the launch of the Nokia N9, the product is now being rolled out in countries around the world. At this time we will not be making it available in the US. Nokia takes a market by market approach to product rollout, and each country makes its own decisions about which products to introduce from those available. Decisions are based on an assessment of existing and upcoming products that make up Nokia’s extensive product portfolio and the best way in which to address local market opportunities.”

Take note: The response by Nokia says “At this time”. Also take note: “Decisions are based on an assessment of existing and upcoming products”.

Oddly enough Engadget decided to title their article: “Nokia: the N9 isn’t coming to America”.

I think the Nokia N9 will eventually see the light of day in the United States but it won’t be widely available or on a carrier. But then again… when’s the last time you saw a Nokia smartphone pushed hard by any carrier in America?

If the numbers being produced are correct, and the demand as high as it appears to be, I doubt many N9′s will be left for a release in the US, let’s hope the 92,000 handsets disappear so quickly that Nokia and Mr Elop are force to do a U turn and put the phone into a proper production run and make it readily available for all markets. It looks far better than any WP offering I’ve seen ?

I agree. I don’t think 92k N9s will be enough with all the hype this phone is getting already. People are shitting the bed right now because of all the false news about the N9 not reaching US shores. Just goes to show how much people want this thing.

I’m mostly shocked that nobody actually READ the Nokia quote that @engadget:twitter posted about N9 available in USA.

Can’t see the Nokia Board refusing to sell expensive high end phones to people, whatever previous decisions were made, it’s economically illogical ? That is assuming Nokia is still a commercial business ? Surely, the bottom line is the bottom line ???

Nothing odd about Engadget titling it that way.  The best way to get post clicks is to say what people want to hear. :)   Darren also kept repeating in the post that N9 is Nokia’s first and Last Meego phone.  I still haven’t seen anything official on that.  Just Eldar and Engadget and we know how accurate they are with Nokia news.

The thing is , most people tend to see what they want to see, and not what actually exists, shock headline causes more interest than ‘Nokia N9 available on Amazon within 2 months, no carrier support’ , it’s the way of the world ?

Thanks Mike.  And maybe now people will understand why I titled my N9 blog article as I did: http://tabulacrypticum.wordpress.com/2011/06/23/nokias-n9-cool-cruel-and-unusual/
    ;)

I completely understand why Engadget did that now that you mention it. But… the  articles that linked to it afterwards raise my eyebrow a bit.

*sigh* Thats what you get when you leave 18 year old iPhone fetishists in charge of the review process. Garbage piling on garbage forever after. Although Nokia have done their fair share of shooting themselves in the head with gleeful abandon.
Imagine, S40 phones that are finally practically bordering on smartphones – and they pull them out of the market with the biggest influence, if not intelligence (since when was an N95 a *featurephone* ??!), on the planet.
